MSA Ltd. analyses all trace exhibits such
as banknotes, phones, vehicles etc. using a technique called tandem mass spectrometry.
The Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs, SWGDRUG, has classified this technique as a category AA rated technique, suitable for use in both civil and criminal casework.
Mass spectrometry (as used by MSA Ltd.) should not be confused with Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), which has been classified by the same group as a category B technique.
In light of the recent decision by a large UK Police force to stop the use of IMS technology (e.g. Ionscan & Itemiser etc) for use in drugs work; MSA would like to clarify that the analysis of trace exhibits in our laboratory is not based on IMS.
