MSA is able to identify drugs and related materials within a range of sample preparations, including, tablets, herbal material, powders and liquids.

MSA has a comprehensive database of commercial and illicit pharmaceuticals that can easily be searched to identify suspect tablets or capsules. Sample identification is confirmed using a combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Chemical profiling, by GC/MS, seeks to match samples. Samples with the same constituents in the same proportions will be indistinguishable by their chemical profile. This can be extended to calculations of a percentage purity assessment of the samples by comparison with internationally certified and recognised standards.

When purities or profiles are found to differ, MSA has the capability of analysing the sample to compare the isotopic composition of the individual components of each sample to establish any common source. The more individual components within each mixture that are found to have the same isotopic composition the greater the support that the samples originate from a common source.

MSA are able to provide expert witness testimony on the identification and valuation of controlled drugs prepared by other laboratories.
